Discounts Overview provides an overview of usage metrics on your benefits platform, including the percentage of members who have logged in and the total amount of savings in the last 30 days.
To use to Discounts Overview, on your benefits platform, go to Account > Platform Insights.
Note: Discounts Overview is only available to members with SmartSpending enabled on their platform. For more information, see SmartSpending™ Client Welcome Pack.
This article will give an overview of the data behind all of the charts and widgets inside the Discounts Overview dashboard.
Where the Data Comes From
To ensure that clients are shown the most relevant and accurate data possible, we have done the following:
-
We only show SmartSpending™ spend in the reports. SmartTech™ and Reward (R&R) spend are not included in the report. While we have always separated SmartTech™ reporting from the reports we provide, we are now also ensuring R&R purchases are excluded.
-
Held and Rejected orders are not shown in the spend amount. Previously, if an error occurred during an employee's transaction on SmartSpending™, the transaction would sometimes still appear on employee spend and saving reports. Our new insights reports, however, have been engineered to identify and omit any failed transactions straight away so that these figures will not be included and therefore will avoid any confusion.
-
We have corrected the way we attribute spend for Cashback retailers. Some retailers operate a ‘multi-brand’ strategy where they sell under different names. For example, airport car parks are listed on Reward Gateway at each geographic location around the UK. Since 2017, we have been able to attribute Cashback purchases that were made back to the specific brand the employee started their purchase journey with. However, during the development of SmartInsights, we found that this spend was still being corrected using pre-2017 logic. This resulted in lower spend and savings being reported at these retailers.
- Reloadable card 'purchases' will no longer count as a ‘transaction’. In our previous reports, we always considered a reloadable card 'purchase' a transaction as well as a top-up. This has been changed and we’re now only counting the top-up. This will slightly reduce the number of transactions we report when people have ordered a new reloadable card.
Filtering Data
The ‘Filters’ section enables clients to set the scope of data to be extracted. All data and charts will then be based on these parameters.
-
To filter data, select a filter from one or more of the following dropdown menus:
- Group Type–User-defined segments of employees, such as divisions, departments, and office locations
- Group Name–User-defined group names
- Filter by time period–The number of weeks/months/years to be shown data for. The maximum time period that can be shown on these reports is 5 years.
- Click Apply Filter.
The filter is applied. Metrics displayed are now based on the parameters selected.

Discounts Overview Tab
The Discounts overview tab displays the following metrics:
Metric | Description |
Platform/App logins year on year |
This graph illustrates the trend in the number of logins made by employees across the number of months (or weeks) selected on the filter. The solid line represents the data for the time period you have selected on the filter and the dashed line represents the logins for the same time a year ago. This enables Year-on-Year comparisons to be made. Clients can switch between Web and App logins using the tabs above the graph. Note: This data has previously been available in the report R99. |
Registered/Logged in employees |
The ‘Logged in employees’ widget shows how many employees that are registered have also logged in to their platform at least once within the time period specified on the filter. Note: This data has previously been available in the reports R1 and R99. |
Savers/Repeat Savers |
The ‘Savers’ widget shows how many employees that are registered have also made at least one purchase within the time period specified on the filter. For ‘Repeat Savers’, it’s those who have then gone on to make two or more purchases over the same time period. Note: This data has previously been available in the reports R1 and R3. |
Employees with most/least discount savings | These leaderboard tables provides a list of employees who have saved (not spent) the most and least amount of money. Clients can see which employees are most engaged with their platform, as well as those who are least engaged and could possibly benefit from some guidance. |
Total values for the last 30 days |
The total values widgets display figures for the last 30 days of the time period specified on the filter. If the time period specified is less than 30 days then it will take the whole time period into account. |
Average values for the last 30 days | The average value widgets display average figures for the last 30 days of the time period specified on the filter. If the time period specified is less than 30 days then it will take the whole time period into account. |
SmartSpending App data | The app data combines both iOS and Android statistics. The data only counts employees that have downloaded and logged in to the SmartSpending™ app. The data does not include employees who might have subsequently uninstalled the app. |

Transactions Tab
The Transactions tab displays the following metrics:
Metric | Description |
Number of transaction vs number of savers year on year |
This graph contains two key sets of data. Firstly, it illustrates the trend in the number of transactions employees have made across the time period selected on the filter. Secondly, this graph also shows the number of employees that made those transactions for each respective month. There are also dashed lines for both sets of data to compare ‘Previous Year’ performance. |
Origin of transactions over time |
This stacked bar graph illustrates the proportion of transactions that have been made using the web browser, mobile app and ‘Others’. The ‘Others’ data consists of transactions made using Top-Up by Text or Auto Top-Up/Recurring Order. This graph provides an indicator of how engaged your employees are using the browser versus using the app to make their savings. |
Number of transactions by time of day (scroll right) |
This heat map shows you the number of transactions employees are making every hour across the time period specified on the filter. Please note that the chart starts from the specified start date and scrolls horizontally to the right until the specified end date (old to new). |
Retailers by number of transactions | This section provides a list of retailers ordered by most transactions to least transactions within the specified time period. There is also a visual aid/horizontal bar chart in the second column to help identify trends. This chart provides an indicator of engagement from a retailer perspective. |

Spend and Savings Tabs
It is important to understand the dynamic relationship between spend and savings. A large spend doesn’t always mean a large saving (although in most cases it will). To enable clients to see these differences and assess different purchasing patterns, we have both a ‘Spend’ and ‘Savings’ tab.
The charts in these tabs provide similar insights to the charts in the ‘Transactions’ tab, but from a Spend and Savings perspective.
