Avios are a reward currency that you can collect with frequent flyer programmes - in this case, British Airways (BA) Executive Club. It is a points system that works in a similar way to Nectar and Tesco Clubcard, but with travel-focused rewards.
Avios can be collected when booking flights, hotel stays, car hire and more with British Airways and their partners. They can then be exchanged to pay for flights, hotels, car hire, experiences and even wine via the BA Executive Club.
How to collect Avios points
To start collecting and spending Avios, you'll need to be signed up to the British Airways Executive Club. It's free and easy to sign up, and you'll use your BA Executive Club membership number when making bookings and purchases with Avios partners to collect the points.

How to spend Avios
Avios sit within your BA Executive Club account. From there, you can use your Avios for the following:
Reward Flights
Flights that you book using Avios are called reward flights. You can book to any worldwide destination, where there’s availability, with British Airways and its oneworld® partners, which include Qantas and American Airlines. You pay with your Avios plus a cash amount for taxes, fees and carrier charges.
Reward Flight Saver
Reward Flight Saver offers customers great value flights with a low, flat fee to cover taxes, fees and carrier charges, starting from just £1 and a fixed Avios amount. To be eligible for Reward Flight Saver, you need to have collected at least one Avios in the past 12 months. Read more about Reward Flight Saver.
❍ Example UK (June 2022): 18,500 Avios + £1 is enough for an off-peak return economy flight for one person from London to over 40 European destinations such as Geneva, Milan and Nice.
Flight Upgrades
Avios can be used to upgrade a regular cash booking to the next cabin, where there’s availability, on selected fares with British Airways, Iberia and American Airlines.
Avios Part Payment
Reduce the cash price of your flight by paying part of the price in Avios, with as little as 1,000 Avios. The more Avios you use, the less cash you'll need to pay. Plus, you'll earn Avios back on the flight, too. Avios Part Payment can be used to save on British Airways flights and American Airlines flights between the UK and North America, and British Airways codeshare flights operated by Aer Lingus, Iberia, airBaltic, Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Bangkok Airways, Cathay Pacific, China Eastern, China Southern, Fiji Airways, Finnair, Japan Airlines, LATAM, Loganair, Qantas, Qatar and Vistara.
❍ Example UK (June 2022): With savings ranging from as little as 1,000 Avios for £10 off any Economy return flight for bookings made in GBP, departing from the UK.
Avios can also now be used as part payment on holiday packages with British Airways Holidays. So you could cut the cost of a city break, a fly-drive or your next beach holiday.
Pay with Avios
Use your Avios to pay for advance seat reservations or extra baggage.
Hotel stays, car rental, experiences and more
Redeem your Avios to pay for hotel stays (powered by Expedia), car rental (with Avis and Budget) and experiences booked via the BA Executive Club. Or for something to bring that holiday feeling a bit closer, you can spend your Avios on expertly curated wines, craft spirits and beers – including those found on British Airways flights - with The Wine Flyer.
