When it came to building the push notification feature for the SmartSpending™ app, we had to tread a fine line – keep employees up to date on the latest savings so they can save as much as possible without bugging them with so many notifications that they become disengaged with the offering altogether.
We feel we've achieved this with the following push notifications:
Deal of the Week
This notification is sent every Monday morning when the new Deal of the Week offer becomes available. Tapping on the notification opens the app on the Deal of the Week offer right away. The push notification employees will see is below:
'[Retailer] is the Deal of the Week! Don't miss out on the savings.'
Top Offers
This notification is sent every Monday morning when the new set of top offers become available. Tapping on the notification opens the app on the home screen where the user can see the selection of top offers. The push notification employees will see is below:
'Check out this week's new selection of Top Offers!
Favorite Retailer on promotion
If an employee has favorited a specific retailer which has a promotional offer, the employee will receive a push notification as soon as the promotion starts. Tapping on the notification opens that retailers page within the app. The push notification employees will see is below:
'[Retailer] is on promotion today. Don't miss out!
Basket reminder
We send a push notification to users who have an item sitting in their basket for more than 24 hours. This notification is only sent once and is only sent again if the user adds more items to their basket and leaves them sitting their again for 24 hours. The push notification employees will see is below:
'Discounted items are in your basket. Tap to save now!'
How do employees opt-in/out from receiving notifications?
Employees are free to switch alerts on and off at any time.
When first installing the app, we ask them if they're happy to receive push notifications.
If they wish to turn on/off push notifications after this step, they are able to from the 'My Account' section of the app. Within there, they will see an 'Allow Notifications' setting with the option to toggle on/off – shown in the red box on the screenshot below. If the employee has the app installed on more than one device, the notification setting choice will apply to all devices.
Those who already have a blanket choice not to receive any push notifications on their device through the operating system's main settings will not receive a push notification from the app regardless of whether this is set to on/off within the My Account section.
