Introduction
This guide will explain how to set up segments using the SmartHub Builder. This article is useful to all members who are working with SmartHub pages.
Background
One of our clients' favorite features of SmartHub is its ability to tailor content to different employee user groups.
Within their SmartHub Builder, clients can quickly and easily create several versions of a piece of content to suit different employee groups, for example, based on their location, department, and job role.
For the employee, this creates a more personalized user experience and keeps staff engaged by making their SmartHub content relevant to them.
For the employer, it means they have the flexibility to advertise company benefits and incentives when different groups within the business have different offerings. It also allows them to target different business areas with tailored content, for example, content for people managers, or policies relevant to different business units.
SmartHub Segments
What can be segmented on Smarthub:
- SmartHub homepages
- The images, links and content of individual SmartHub Tiles (depending on tile type)
- SmartHub Pages
- Top menu bar
- Individual posts within the same SmartHub Blog
- Discounts*
What can't be segmented:
- Program name, logo and URL
- Left-hand menus
- The titles of SmartHub Blogs
- Type of discounts offers, offer pages, and the My Account section
- Product pages (e.g., eCards, Cycle to Work)
Segmentation Requirements
What's required for segmentation
Clients will need to send us the data groups: That they wish to segment their content by. For example, if they'd like to segment by department, we'll need a list of all the departments in the organization so that we can log them on Reward Manager and enable them as an option when building versioned content.
An up-to-date employee data file: Clients should make sure that the spreadsheet they send us includes one column for every new segment being added (e.g., Department, Location, Job Role, etc.). If the client site has Single Sign-On (SSO), they should speak with their Implementation Specialist or Client Support Manager to discuss any potential process differences.
Clarity on which areas of the site the client wishes to segment: The client needs to decide which versions of their SmartHub homepage, individual Tiles or Pages each group should see.

Segmentation Examples
Example 1
Shows how tile types, sizes and positions can vary for different groups, creating tailored homepage layouts:
The left-hand version is for employees who can send eCards and nominate colleagues for awards. The version on the right is for employees outside of the group of eCard senders and nominators.
Example 2
Shows how individual tiles can be tailored, without affecting the rest of the homepage layout:
In this example, employees working for separate divisions or brands within one parent company can have their logo and relevant colors for their brand for a more personalized experience.
The client can use the tailoring functionality for individual Tiles and then set them to show to the relevant segments.
The versions in this example are the same type, size, and position on the page, but using brand colors and logos they are made more relevant to the employee.
Example 3
Demonstrates the ability to tailor the middle and right-hand side column content of SmartHub Pages and blog articles:
In this example, a page sharing induction material with managers is segmented so that managers in different business areas can find the documents and information that are relevant to their teams.
