Learn how to create a Team Virtual Race challenge and set a realistic team goal

What is a Team Virtual Race challenge?

The Team Virtual Race mode allows participants to compete in a long-distance race along a virtual path. This mode allows you to set a distance goal for your participants to reach over the course of the challenge. In this article, we'll explain how to create a Team Virtual Race challenge and set a realistic goal for teams to aim for.

Before we get started, here are a few important notes to keep in mind:

If you’re using a custom racetrack, it must be published before it will show up as an option to select during challenge creation. Learn more here.
You must create your challenge and add your Team Virtual Race mode to the challenge before you can create teams and begin inviting users to join.

Creating a Team Virtual Race challenge

Go to the Wellbeing+ admin center and select the Challenges tab from the side navigation menu.
Select the green "+ Create challenge" button
Enter your challenge details (for help with this step, click here) and select Next
Scroll down to Team modes and select Team Virtual Race

5. Select the racetrack theme you want to run for your Team Virtual Race

6. Enter a team goal for each team to work towards during your challenge. For tips on setting a realistic goal, click here.

7. Select your preferred team settings and select Save to add your Team Virtual Race mode to your challenge.

8. After adding any additional challenge modes, select the green Save and Continue button to review your challenge details and select Finish to create your challenge.

9. Select View Challenge to go to your challenge dashboard and locate your Team Virtual Race mode.

10. Select Manage Teams to create and manage teams.

How a Team Virtual Race is scored

The goal you set for your Team Virtual Race represents the average total distance that each team needs to reach to complete the race. The average total distance is found by combining all distance totals moved by each team member on a team, and then dividing by the number of team members on that team to find the per person average.

Example

Team Member 1: 40 total miles
Team Member 2: 50 total miles
Team Member 3: 60 total miles

Total Team Miles = 150

Team Members = 3

150 total team miles ÷ 3 team members = 50 average total miles

As participants move through the race as a team, they will reach milestones together where they unlock fun and educational content related to your virtual race theme, so you’ll want to set a realistic goal that gives every team the chance the finish the race!

In the screenshots below, you can see that teams will be able to view their average total distance moved along the map, along with their overall team rank compared to other teams participating in the race:

How to set a Team Virtual Race goal

When setting a Team Virtual Race goal, you’ll want to consider two things:

Average user distance total per day
Duration of challenge (in days)

The equation you'll use to determine your group goal:

Average user distance total/day X Total days of duration

Determining your average user activity per day

How many miles or kilometers do you think your users will average each day of the challenge? You can reference the User Report in the Admin Center to help you find this number.

In the Admin Center, go to the Reports tab in the side navigation menu. Run a User Report based on the date range of your most recent challenge.

Download the User Report. Take the average of the Average Distance column.

A safe average to reference is 2.5 miles or 4 kilometers per day.
